The four members of 'Henry Essence' were themselves no older than 15 years old when they recorded the underground anthem '14 Year Old Lover'.
The group, all pupils of a Boarding School on the Isle of Wight, lied about their age in order to play in pubs and clubs with their sappy brand of Punk / Powerpop quickly earned them a considerable local following.
The band played at the Isle of Wight Punk festival in 1978 along with the other Isle of Wight Punk bands 'Last Straw' & 'The Pumphouse Gang'. They also played many gigs around their area swapping support slots with 'The Pumphouse Gang'.
In their career, they recorded the following tracks:
Margarita
14 Year Old Lover
Steve
Wet Dream
Baktu
Show Stealer
Agony Column
Didn't Know We Like It
Underage Drinker
Preacher Man
View Of The Sea
Aggravation
Confession
Cum Out (To My Place)
Drug, Play & Me
All of these tracks were recorded between 1977 - 1979 and are all unreleased apart from the first two tracks that appeared on their one and only single.
'Henry Essence' disbanded at the end of their school careers, and went their separate ways all around the South of England, but remained close friends and even got back together last year to write and record some new tracks.
A book was published a few years ago about the Isle of Wight music scene, and the band were mentioned in this!
